Question
I have to Parakeets and one is a boy and one is a girl. I was wondering one of them are pooping red poop. I would like to know if he/she is ill or not. I got them at Petsmart last April. Please help! THANK YOU

Answer
Hi, Jennifer,

Red poop can be blood in the feces or it could be that the bird has recently eaten something red.  Could also be some type of liver malfunction or something similar.  Are your keets on colored pelleted food and/or did you feed something red or almost red colored a few hours before you saw the red poop?  Did this occur one time or numerous times/continuing?  Has this bird recently laid eggs?  How is this bird's behavior otherwise?  If none of the above applies, I would recommend you consult with a certified avian veterinarian.

Expertise

I`ve been raising/breeding/handfeeding/selling parrots for over 20 years (parakeets/budgies, cockatiels, 6 subspecies of conures, parrotlets, amazons, lovebirds, etc.). I've been published in "Budgies" and "Cockatiels" offered by Bow Tie Productions, and have written avian articles for publication in England. I can provide advice in raising healthy birds, handfeeding/weaning babies, some health problems (although I'm NOT an avian veterinarian), nail/beak/wing clipping, general husbandry, etc. I also have experience with racing/showing homing pigeons. I cannot diagnose specific illness over this website. If you suspect your bird is ill or if you have an emergency, contact an avian veterinarian or emergency pet clinic ASAP.
