Question
I recently purchased a 1 yr. old male rare parakeet.  Should I be concerned that the bird makes no vocal sounds at all.  He sometimes opens his mouth when I talk to him but does not chirp, sing, or make any other sound.

Hi, Karen,

Depending on how recently you purchased this bird, you might need to give the bird more time to get used to you and its new environment.  Are you sure of this bird's sex?  Female keets aren't as vocal as males, and not all males are vocal.

I`ve been raising/breeding/handfeeding/selling parrots for over 20 years (parakeets/budgies, cockatiels, 6 subspecies of conures, parrotlets, amazons, lovebirds, etc.). I've been published in "Budgies" and "Cockatiels" offered by Bow Tie Productions, and have written avian articles for publication in England. I cannot diagnose specific illness over this website. If you suspect your bird is ill or if you have an emergency, contact an avian veterinarian or emergency pet clinic ASAP.
