Question
I rescued a female cardinal who has a broken leg and broken wing. She won't be able to be released again, so would like to get her a companion. A male cardinal would be perfect but I don't know of any place that has them so do you know of another kind of bird that might get along with my cardinal?

Answer
Hi, Curious,

Depending on where you live, Cardinals might be against the law to keep in captivity.  In Ohio where I live, they are the state bird and illegal to keep or harm.

I'm not sure I would recommend putting this bird in with another bird because of her broken leg and wing.  Have the leg and wing been repaired by an avian vet?  Some birds, particularly wild birds, might try to kill the female you have because of her disabilities.  In nature, birds with injuries and who are sick are often run out of the flock and/or killed so as not to attract predators to the flock/family/area (predators look for sick and/or injured birds because they are easy prey).  If this bird will be crippled the rest of her life, you might need to customize her cage so she can get along inside the cage.

I have no knowledge of another type of bird that might be compatible with your cardinal.  You might want to research in some books, on the internet, etc.  You might also watch them outside to see what other types of birds might eat along side them without any hassles.  You might also try speaking with your local wildlife service (fish and wildlife office) for additional information.

Expertise

I`ve been raising/breeding/handfeeding/selling parrots for over 20 years (parakeets/budgies, cockatiels, 6 subspecies of conures, parrotlets, amazons, lovebirds, etc.). I've been published in "Budgies" and "Cockatiels" offered by Bow Tie Productions, and have written avian articles for publication in England. I can provide advice in raising healthy birds, handfeeding/weaning babies, some health problems (although I'm NOT an avian veterinarian), nail/beak/wing clipping, general husbandry, etc. I also have experience with racing/showing homing pigeons. I cannot diagnose specific illness over this website. If you suspect your bird is ill or if you have an emergency, contact an avian veterinarian or emergency pet clinic ASAP.
