Question
my baby cockateil has splayed legs.the baby is 10 days old.what can i do to help him? should i take him to the vet to see if he can help me? thank you frances wolfe
Hi, Frances,
There are many internet websites that have pictures and can tell you how you can fix this problem yourself. Hobbling must be done right away in order to be beneficial. Search the internet using the search string "splay leg." If you don't correct/have corrected, this bird will be crippled all of it's life. You can also take this baby to a certified avian veterinarian who can hobble the bird's legs for you.

I`ve been raising/breeding/handfeeding/selling parrots for over 20 years (parakeets/budgies, cockatiels, 6 subspecies of conures, parrotlets, amazons, lovebirds, etc.). I cannot diagnose specific illness over this website. If you suspect your bird is ill or if you have an emergency, contact an avian veterinarian or emergency pet clinic ASAP.
