Question
Abi just realised you did not post but the expert that answered I do apologise,
I injured my hen by letting a heavy door fall on her yesterday.,It fell side on & crushed her one wing was flapping out at one side, she was screaming. she hobbled away, survived the nigt is eating drinking gritting poohing fine but cannot weight bare on that side, She can stretch out the wing fine And tonight scratched her ear with that leg, She can only hobble a few paces, she is safe apart from others & indoors. she is well attended to & has had metacam yesterday when she got over the shock & again today, I haven't taken her to a vet as yet fearful that moving her unnessaarily will be worse. someone said ger air sacs might have been damaged & on ggogling the interclavical one would seem a possibility. Is this a fatal injury, is it treatable or what? I eagerly await yoyr reply, thanks for your time Sandy in Surrey

Answer
If she is breathing ok (eg no rattling, wheezing or discharge from the mouth or nostrils) then I doubt she will have been damaged in this way. I think she will just need a lot of TLC until she gets stronger, and then maybe a visit to the vet is in order, just in case of any broken bones etc. Also if she has any wounds she may need antibiotics in case of infection, so I suggest giving your vets a ring to see what else you can do for her.

Thanks for your question, sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Expertise

I CAN'T ANSWER QUESTIONS ON ANIMALS OTHER THAN CHICKENS/DUCKS/GEESE- I WILL TRY BUT THEY ARE NOT MY SPECIALIST SUBJECT- PLEASE DO NOT ASK ME QUESTIONS ABOUT BUDGIES, FINCHES, PARROTS, COCKATIELS OR OTHER 'EXOTIC' BIRDS. I can answer questions on pretty much all CHICKEN breeds, including fancy and bantam birds. I can give advice on how to get the best egg production, brightest yolk colours and darkest egg shell colours, breeding (using broody hens, not incubators), bird problems/illnesses. I can give advice on all aspects of basic chicken care but I breed chickens for my own pleasure only, I do not often show or sell my birds.

Experience

I own and breed a wide range of chickens, but I speciallise in cochins and crevecour bantams; crevecours have a large crest (an afro!) so I can answer questions on problems concerning them; cochins have feathered legs, which leads to no end of problems which I have experienced! I also own a large flock of domestic, rescued 'battery' hens, and a single maran hen, Hilda, who is the matriarch of her flock, so I can give advice on how to get the best colour of maran eggs!
