Birds--General/What to do if a bird is choking?

Question
Hi

I have 2 cockatiels

Today I witnessed what I think may have been one of my tiels choking. Her mouth was gaping open and she was making a small coughing sound and acted as though she couldn't breathe.

I really had no idea what to do, I pet her on her back.
Then after about one agonizing minute she made a few deep gulps and carried on playing/eating in her food bowl as if nothing had happened.

What exactly are you supposed to do if your bird is choking (assuming she was?)

Answer
She was unlikely chocking, while it is a bit disputed amoung breeder's as to wether she is yawning or clearing her throat of dust and other debris, it is common behavior in cockatiels.

I don't think you have anything to worry about.

Blessings,
-m
