Birds--General/duck laying soft eggs

Question
Hello,
I have a 6 month old female pekin duck. She is a pet to us. She lives indoors and outdoors. Her pen outside is basically garden and woodchips, she has a kiddie pool to bathe in. I feed her a good quality start, grow, lay feed that she has access to at all times and fresh water. When she comes inside she sleeps in a hutch on newspapers. She is inside every night and when the weather is really nasty. She wears a duck diaper when she has free roam of the kitchen. She lives with dogs, cats and 2 housetrained potbellied pigs. Anyway, my question is she began laying eggs in the begining of Dec. and layed one a day for probably close to 3 weeks in the morning. Lately she has begun laying 2 eggs that are soft and one is much smaller than the other and she has been laying them in her swimming pool in the afternoon and today she laid them in her indoor hutch. Is this normal or should i be concerned. Otherwise she is acting like her normal self. I didn't even think she was suppose to be laying eggs this time of year, or at all let alone two. Will be very interested to hear what you think. Thank you so much for your time.

Answer
Hello Doris,

Probably because she spends a lot of time inside in the warm she will be laying more eggs- she wouldn't normally be laying eggs in winter so this is why they are a bit wierd I think. Cut down on the laying feed to give her body a rest :)

Thanks for your question.

Expertise

I CAN'T ANSWER QUESTIONS ON ANIMALS OTHER THAN CHICKENS/DUCKS/GEESE- I WILL TRY BUT THEY ARE NOT MY SPECIALIST SUBJECT- PLEASE DO NOT ASK ME QUESTIONS ABOUT BUDGIES, FINCHES, PARROTS, COCKATIELS OR OTHER 'EXOTIC' BIRDS. I can answer questions on pretty much all CHICKEN breeds, including fancy and bantam birds. I can give advice on how to get the best egg production, brightest yolk colours and darkest egg shell colours, breeding (using broody hens, not incubators), bird problems/illnesses. I can give advice on all aspects of basic chicken care but I breed chickens for my own pleasure only, I do not often show or sell my birds.

Experience

I own and breed a wide range of chickens, but I speciallise in cochins and crevecour bantams; crevecours have a large crest (an afro!) so I can answer questions on problems concerning them; cochins have feathered legs, which leads to no end of problems which I have experienced! I also own a large flock of domestic, rescued 'battery' hens, and a single maran hen, Hilda, who is the matriarch of her flock, so I can give advice on how to get the best colour of maran eggs!
