Birds--General/Cockatiel Heavy Breathing

Question
Misty one of my cockatiels passed away yesterday. Starlight my other one does not look too well. They were from the same "batch" and turned 20 in August. Starlight is breathing heavily and her droppings seem to be very liquidy and have a large amount of blood in them. Do you suggest I take her to a veterinarian or is she just too old for help? Do you think she is in pain? Could they give her medicine to help or for pain? Please e-mail me ASAP!

Answer
Hi, Christy.  Thanks for posting!

I'm sorry about your loss.  You need to get Starlight to the avian vet ASAP...not tomorrow, but TODAY, or you might lose her.  She obviously has respiratory problems and the blood indicates it's very serious.

Expertise

I`ve been raising/breeding/handfeeding/selling parrots for over 20 years (parakeets/budgies, cockatiels, 6 subspecies of conures, parrotlets, amazons, lovebirds, etc.). I've been published in "Budgies" and "Cockatiels" offered by Bow Tie Productions, and have written avian articles for publication in England. I can provide advice in raising healthy birds, handfeeding/weaning babies, some health problems (although I'm NOT an avian veterinarian), nail/beak/wing clipping, general husbandry, etc. I also have experience with racing/showing homing pigeons. I cannot diagnose specific illness over this website. If you suspect your bird is ill or if you have an emergency, contact an avian veterinarian or emergency pet clinic ASAP.
