Birds--General/Cockatiel squawking

Question
Are there some general guidelines on limiting unwarranted sustained loud squawking ? (Note: 3-yr.-old male, bird usually has to be in cage, take out about once/wk, clip wings, good care, attention whenever possible, etc.) Have tried lots of things to no effect. Haven't tried a mirror in the cage yet.

Thanks.

Answer
Hi, Lou.  Thanks for posting.

You need to get to the bottom of why the tiel is squawking loudly in the first place.  Generally, parrots don't just squawk loudly all the time unless something is amiss or they need something.  Is this new behavior?  Has something in the household changed?  Are you paying less attention to him now than before?  Does he have plenty of toys, etc., to keep him busy?  Proper diet and lighting, etc.?

What types of things have you tried to remedy the situation?

Visit my website for other general information and to see if you might find a reason why your tiel is screaming all the time:

Expertise

I`ve been raising/breeding/handfeeding/selling parrots for over 20 years (parakeets/budgies, cockatiels, 6 subspecies of conures, parrotlets, amazons, lovebirds, etc.). I've been published in "Budgies" and "Cockatiels" offered by Bow Tie Productions, and have written avian articles for publication in England. I can provide advice in raising healthy birds, handfeeding/weaning babies, some health problems (although I'm NOT an avian veterinarian), nail/beak/wing clipping, general husbandry, etc. I also have experience with racing/showing homing pigeons. I cannot diagnose specific illness over this website. If you suspect your bird is ill or if you have an emergency, contact an avian veterinarian or emergency pet clinic ASAP.
