Question
My love bird passed away last night.  She was 9 years old in great health.  She just started hollering and when I ran to her cage she was laying on her back.  I picked her up and she just died.  She showed no signs of ill health.  What happened?

Thanks.  Pam

Answer
Hi, Pam.  I'm so sorry to hear about your loss.

I don't know exactly what happened...I can only guess.  If you want to know for sure, take your lovebird's body to an avian veterinarian for a necropsy (animal autopsy) within 2 days (keep body in refrigerator until then).

Your lovebird could have had a heart attack, stroke, etc., or s/he could have been sick, but you didn't recognize any symptoms.  Birds hide illness until they can't hide it any more, and then sometimes it's too late to do anything.

Expertise

I`ve been raising/breeding/handfeeding/selling parrots for over 20 years (parakeets/budgies, cockatiels, 6 subspecies of conures, parrotlets, amazons, lovebirds, etc.). I've been published in "Budgies" and "Cockatiels" offered by Bow Tie Productions, and have written avian articles for publication in England. I can provide advice in raising healthy birds, handfeeding/weaning babies, some health problems (although I'm NOT an avian veterinarian), nail/beak/wing clipping, general husbandry, etc. I also have experience with racing/showing homing pigeons. I cannot diagnose specific illness over this website. If you suspect your bird is ill or if you have an emergency, contact an avian veterinarian or emergency pet clinic ASAP.
