Question
Hi, I have 5 Budgies and three of them are female and ive only noticed recently that one is attacking another female, the female who is the aggressor has been in the cage for two years with her mate and we allowed them at 1yrs old to mate .

she was very succesfully and raised 3 chicks, but sadly 5 months later the smallest one died.

she had( before the first one died ( 2 females, and 1 male) and after the first one died we had 1 male and 1 female , i bought the male a mate and they got on fine, and then her mate escaped and has not been found since, anyway i bought her a new mate and ever since last week the eldest female has been picking on the female with the new mate.

please help wot can i do?

Answer
Hi, Geraint.  Thanks for posting!

You need to remove one of the females from the cage and put her in a cage of her own (with her mate if she has one).  Otherwise, the aggressive female will likely kill the other female.

Also, do not colony breed your budgies.  It does not work.  When you want a pair of your budgies to breed, move the pair into a separate breeding cage and allow them to breed by themselves in a cage by themselves.

Come back with any questions.

I`ve been raising/breeding/handfeeding/selling parrots for over 20 years (parakeets/budgies, cockatiels, 6 subspecies of conures, parrotlets, amazons, lovebirds, etc.). I've been published in "Budgies" and "Cockatiels" offered by Bow Tie Productions, and have written avian articles for publication in England. I can provide advice in raising healthy birds, handfeeding/weaning babies, some health problems (although I'm NOT an avian veterinarian), nail/beak/wing clipping, general husbandry, etc. I also have experience with racing/showing homing pigeons. I cannot diagnose specific illness over this website. If you suspect your bird is ill or if you have an emergency, contact an avian veterinarian or emergency pet clinic ASAP.
