Question
Hi,

I am looking for a female parakeet for breeding. Do you know where I could find one?

Also how old does a Parakeet have to be to breed it, and if I have a 10 year old male and a young female will it make any deference than if I have two of the same age?

Answer
Hi, Roseanna.  Thanks for posting!

No, I don't know where you can find female keet for breeding.  You might check your local newspaper ads, phone books, etc.  I recommend you look for a breeder of keets versus buying at a pet store.

A keet should be at least 1 year old for breeding.  A 10-year old male should be OK with a younger bird.  However, 10 years old is awfully old for a keet.  A male this age might have sperm count problems or could be sterile.  Also, if not healthy, could present problems in babies.  It's best if the female is a little bit older than the male, but both should be in prime breeding condition.

Expertise

I`ve been raising/breeding/handfeeding/selling parrots for over 20 years (parakeets/budgies, cockatiels, 6 subspecies of conures, parrotlets, amazons, lovebirds, etc.). I've been published in "Budgies" and "Cockatiels" offered by Bow Tie Productions, and have written avian articles for publication in England. I can provide advice in raising healthy birds, handfeeding/weaning babies, some health problems (although I'm NOT an avian veterinarian), nail/beak/wing clipping, general husbandry, etc. I also have experience with racing/showing homing pigeons. I cannot diagnose specific illness over this website. If you suspect your bird is ill or if you have an emergency, contact an avian veterinarian or emergency pet clinic ASAP.
