Question
I am going to have four baby cockatiels in a few days, if I've calculated right, and I I don't know what to do. I want to start handfeeding them at about two or three weeks old. What do I need? How do I do it? Where can I get supplies? HELP!!

Answer
Hi, Kay.  Thanks for posting!

It's a little bit late for you to start worrying about this now!  You have MUCH to learn in a VERY short period of time.  Visit my website for a start to your learning process:

Come back with your questions.  I can tell you where to get supplies, etc., but you will have to learn how to handfeed the babies yourself.  However, the best thing you could do is to have a local breeder or certified avian veterinarian show you how to handfeed so you can get it right.  You can actually kill baby parrots if you don't know what you are doing.

Expertise

I`ve been raising/breeding/handfeeding/selling parrots for over 20 years (parakeets/budgies, cockatiels, 6 subspecies of conures, parrotlets, amazons, lovebirds, etc.). I've been published in "Budgies" and "Cockatiels" offered by Bow Tie Productions, and have written avian articles for publication in England. I can provide advice in raising healthy birds, handfeeding/weaning babies, some health problems (although I'm NOT an avian veterinarian), nail/beak/wing clipping, general husbandry, etc. I also have experience with racing/showing homing pigeons. I cannot diagnose specific illness over this website. If you suspect your bird is ill or if you have an emergency, contact an avian veterinarian or emergency pet clinic ASAP.
