Birds--General/My Keet Won't Eat at All!!!

Question
Well, we've had our parakeet, Cosmo, for two years now, and he's never gotten sick before. Just recently, he ran out of food, so we rushed to the store, and got him some food. It wasn't the kind he normally ate, and he wouldn't eat it. So the next day we went to the pet store and got him the food he's always been eating. He wouldn't eat that, either. He's acting like he always acts, playing with his mirror, climbing on his ladder... but still... I'm woried.

Answer
Hi, Karina.  Thanks for posting.

If you keet isn't ill, he'll eat again when he gets hungry.  Birds don't customarily starve themselves if food is available.  He most likely wouldn't eat the "other" food because he didn't recognize it as food (parrots won't eat anything they don't recognize as food).

You know your keet better than anyone else...if you think he might be ill, your best bet is to take him to an avian vet for a medical evaluation.

Expertise

I`ve been raising/breeding/handfeeding/selling parrots for over 20 years (parakeets/budgies, cockatiels, 6 subspecies of conures, parrotlets, amazons, lovebirds, etc.). I've been published in "Budgies" and "Cockatiels" offered by Bow Tie Productions, and have written avian articles for publication in England. I can provide advice in raising healthy birds, handfeeding/weaning babies, some health problems (although I'm NOT an avian veterinarian), nail/beak/wing clipping, general husbandry, etc. I also have experience with racing/showing homing pigeons. I cannot diagnose specific illness over this website. If you suspect your bird is ill or if you have an emergency, contact an avian veterinarian or emergency pet clinic ASAP.
