Question
Hello Chrys, I have one lovebird aged 7 years, she is on her own owing to her partner dying last year, she has laid  6 eggs this year for the very first time, I have tried in vien to find her fertile eggs to replace the ones she has, what do I do now, should I leave her, keep trying to find some fertile, or take them away from her? I would appreciate your reply, by the way she has laid them in the bottom of her cage, we did not expect this to happen, should we introduce a nest box for her?

Answer
Hi, Joanie.  Thanks for posting!

You don't need to find her fertile eggs.  Just leave any eggs she lays right where she lays them until she abandons them on her own.  If you remove them, she'll continue to lay and lay and this would not be good.  The eggs are infertile of course and she'll abandon them when she's ready.  You do not need to put up a nesting box.  This will just encourage her to lay eggs.  Make sure she has cuttlebone available to replace any calcium lost.

Come back with any questions.

Expertise

I`ve been raising/breeding/handfeeding/selling parrots for over 20 years (parakeets/budgies, cockatiels, 6 subspecies of conures, parrotlets, amazons, lovebirds, etc.). I've been published in "Budgies" and "Cockatiels" offered by Bow Tie Productions, and have written avian articles for publication in England. I can provide advice in raising healthy birds, handfeeding/weaning babies, some health problems (although I'm NOT an avian veterinarian), nail/beak/wing clipping, general husbandry, etc. I also have experience with racing/showing homing pigeons. I cannot diagnose specific illness over this website. If you suspect your bird is ill or if you have an emergency, contact an avian veterinarian or emergency pet clinic ASAP.
