Birds--General/Lovebird regurgitating

Question
Hi I have had my lovebird 'cheeky' for 5 years now and he has just recently started regurgitating.   it gets so bad that sometimes he can't even eat.   I know that they will do this with food with someone/a bird that they like but it really worrying me as he is not coming out of his cage any more and he sits with his wings haging low.   please let me know if there is anything i can do for him or if I need to take him to a vet,
Thnx

Answer
Hi, Keturah.  Thanks for posting.

Based on the information you post stating he's just not his normal self, you should probably get him to an avian vet ASAP.  Regurgitating for affection purposes is normal, but the other statements you make lead me to believe perhaps something more is going on.  Could just be a bit under the weather, but better safe than sorry.

I`ve been raising/breeding/handfeeding/selling parrots for over 20 years (parakeets/budgies, cockatiels, 6 subspecies of conures, parrotlets, amazons, lovebirds, etc.). I've been published in "Budgies" and "Cockatiels" offered by Bow Tie Productions, and have written avian articles for publication in England. I can provide advice in raising healthy birds, handfeeding/weaning babies, some health problems (although I'm NOT an avian veterinarian), nail/beak/wing clipping, general husbandry, etc. I also have experience with racing/showing homing pigeons. I cannot diagnose specific illness over this website. If you suspect your bird is ill or if you have an emergency, contact an avian veterinarian or emergency pet clinic ASAP.
