Question
last night i found a very young sparrow it hopped over to my foot. i picked it up and it was cold so i took it in the house it was haveing a hard time breathing and i thought it was just scared (its mouth was opening and closing and its body was moving up and down). eventually its health started to get worse the bird became week it started to sleep more and more i notice some of the poop was a little runny with(that was tan) but the rest was normal. 12:10 last night i it dead it was still a little warm too, but before it died i was holding then when put it in the cage i had for it i found 2 feathers had come off the bird! what killed the bird and if my were around the bird (they weren't) would they be in danger?

Answer
Hi, Kayla.

There are too many things that could have caused this bird's death that I couldn't even begin to guess.  The bird was definitely sick and this is why you were able to catch it.  If you keep birds, do not let them around a wild bird, as wild birds often carry illness/disease and you wouldn't want any pet birds you have to get sick.

Expertise

I`ve been raising/breeding/handfeeding/selling parrots for over 20 years (parakeets/budgies, cockatiels, 6 subspecies of conures, parrotlets, amazons, lovebirds, etc.). I've been published in "Budgies" and "Cockatiels" offered by Bow Tie Productions, and have written avian articles for publication in England. I can provide advice in raising healthy birds, handfeeding/weaning babies, some health problems (although I'm NOT an avian veterinarian), nail/beak/wing clipping, general husbandry, etc. I also have experience with racing/showing homing pigeons. I cannot diagnose specific illness over this website. If you suspect your bird is ill or if you have an emergency, contact an avian veterinarian or emergency pet clinic ASAP.
