Birds--General/Parakeet Sick

Question
I have 4 parakeets. Have had many in past, but now Frisky is weak and sickly and acting weird, but none of the others are sick.  He is only pecking in seed bowls, seems to only be maybe eating empty husks and not taking seeds and opening in his mouth normally.  He has lost weight and is weak, but still flies during day.  He has taken to sleeping in one of large food bowls at night, to continue his "pecking" thru night, but also so he won't fall off perch.  He seems to have some problem neurologically with making his feet hold on sometimes and is not very alert either.  Do you think I could feed him something like the formula you feed babies when they don't get nursed to restore his strength?  I'm a little afraid to since years ago one of my birds died when I was giving her medicine by birdie syringe.  I'm on disability and can't afford vet.  Please help with any suggestions.  Thanks

Answer
Hi, Alice.

I'm sorry to hear your bird is sick.  Your bird needs certified avian veterinarian medical assistance ASAP or the bird may not survive.  This bird has all the symptoms of illness and needs medication right away.  You need to restrict this bird's activity by placing it in a "hospital" cage where he can't fly around, can be kept warm and quiet until you can get him to the vet.  I cannot emphasize how important it is to get this bird to an avian vet RIGHT AWAY.  I realize you are on disability, but this bird needs medical attention.  Most vet offices will make some type of arrangements for those unable to pay at the time of service.

Expertise

I`ve been raising/breeding/handfeeding/selling parrots for over 20 years (parakeets/budgies, cockatiels, 6 subspecies of conures, parrotlets, amazons, lovebirds, etc.). I've been published in "Budgies" and "Cockatiels" offered by Bow Tie Productions, and have written avian articles for publication in England. I can provide advice in raising healthy birds, handfeeding/weaning babies, some health problems (although I'm NOT an avian veterinarian), nail/beak/wing clipping, general husbandry, etc. I also have experience with racing/showing homing pigeons. I cannot diagnose specific illness over this website. If you suspect your bird is ill or if you have an emergency, contact an avian veterinarian or emergency pet clinic ASAP.
