Birds--General/Parakeet Tumor??

Question
We have had our parakeet for 7 years.  It appears that he has or is growing some type of tumor near his vent.  It's about the size of a medium sized marble and is very hard.  He has always been an uncaged bird and has been very active.  His age has slowed him down some...but this growth is affecting his normally active day.  He still flies but is not able to cover any distances.  Have you ever encountered such a problem. Thanks for any response.  Vic

Answer
Hi, Vic. Thanks for posting!

Yes, I have encountered such a problem.  It could be a tumor, a cyst, a glob of fat, etc.  Are you sure this is a male bird (blue cere)?  If bird was a female, I might also think this could be an egg (perhaps an egg that isn't coming out...a very serious problem in and of itself).

I recommend you take your keet to a certified avian vet ASAP for an evaluation.  Here's a website that can help you find a bird vet in your area:  www.aav.org.

Come back if you have any questions.

Expertise

I`ve been raising/breeding/handfeeding/selling parrots for over 20 years (parakeets/budgies, cockatiels, 6 subspecies of conures, parrotlets, amazons, lovebirds, etc.). I've been published in "Budgies" and "Cockatiels" offered by Bow Tie Productions, and have written avian articles for publication in England. I can provide advice in raising healthy birds, handfeeding/weaning babies, some health problems (although I'm NOT an avian veterinarian), nail/beak/wing clipping, general husbandry, etc. I also have experience with racing/showing homing pigeons. I cannot diagnose specific illness over this website. If you suspect your bird is ill or if you have an emergency, contact an avian veterinarian or emergency pet clinic ASAP.
