Question
We have had or parakeets in our dining room for a long time. There is always things going on like the TV is on and we are in and out of the back door and kitchen. Now that our parakeets have started breeding and laid their first egg, should we move them to a more secluded place?

Answer
Hi, Cindy.  Thanks for posting!

Not necessarily.  The adult birds obviously feel their current location in your home is fine or they wouldn't be laying.  They feel their babies will be safe and secure right where they are, so I wouldn't move them.  Actually, you shouldn't move them now that they've laid eggs.  Doing so might result in them abandoning their egg(s).  I would only advise moving them if they seem stressed out from all the commotion going on around them.  If they are content, leave them where they are.

Expertise

I`ve been raising/breeding/handfeeding/selling parrots for over 20 years (parakeets/budgies, cockatiels, 6 subspecies of conures, parrotlets, amazons, lovebirds, etc.). I've been published in "Budgies" and "Cockatiels" offered by Bow Tie Productions, and have written avian articles for publication in England. I can provide advice in raising healthy birds, handfeeding/weaning babies, some health problems (although I'm NOT an avian veterinarian), nail/beak/wing clipping, general husbandry, etc. I also have experience with racing/showing homing pigeons. I cannot diagnose specific illness over this website. If you suspect your bird is ill or if you have an emergency, contact an avian veterinarian or emergency pet clinic ASAP.
