Question
I have 8 parakeets, one of them started to lay eggs about 1 week ago so far she has layed 3 eggs and i never had experience with this before. so my quastion is ¿am i sopposed to separate her from the others? ¿if the eggs hacth what do the eat? & ¿how long does it take for them to hatch?

Answer
Hi, Ana,

Does the bird laying eggs have a mate?  Did she lay in a nesting box or on the cage bottom?

Visit my website for more general information:  www.angelfire.com/falcon/birdinfo/index.html

If this bird has a mate and these eggs could be fertile and you want them to hatch, the best thing would be to move all the other birds out of the cage and let the breeding pair have the cage.  Otherwise, if you move the breeding pair out, they will likely abandon the eggs and nest.  Colony breeding keets usually doesn't work because other females get jealous of the bird with the eggs and they often fight and hurt that female, break their eggs, and/or kill their babies.

If the eggs are fertile and hatch, the parents will feed them, unless you are going to handfeed them.  There's information on my website regardint his.

It takes about 18 days after incubation begins for keet eggs to hatch, if they are fertile. They will hatch in the order laid, one every other day.

Expertise

I`ve been raising/breeding/handfeeding/selling parrots for over 20 years (parakeets/budgies, cockatiels, 6 subspecies of conures, parrotlets, amazons, lovebirds, etc.). I've been published in "Budgies" and "Cockatiels" offered by Bow Tie Productions, and have written avian articles for publication in England. I can provide advice in raising healthy birds, handfeeding/weaning babies, some health problems (although I'm NOT an avian veterinarian), nail/beak/wing clipping, general husbandry, etc. I also have experience with racing/showing homing pigeons. I cannot diagnose specific illness over this website. If you suspect your bird is ill or if you have an emergency, contact an avian veterinarian or emergency pet clinic ASAP.
