Birds--General/Parakeets

Question
I had 2 parakeets that I bought together when they were young.  Just today, one of them died.  What can I expect with the other one?  Will he be affected by the death of his brother at all?

Answer
Hi, Kathy.  Thanks for posting.

He might be affected and he might not...it just depends on the type of relationship they had and how close they were or weren't.  By this I mean I've seen parrots who were together for up to 10 years that weren't affected at all by the passing of one of the pair, and then I've seen parrots who were deeply affected by the passing of one of the pair.  It just depends on the individual bird.

Did the keet pass away due to illness?  If so, you might need to be more concerned as to whether the living keet will succumb to whatever killed it's sibling.

Expertise

I`ve been raising/breeding/handfeeding/selling parrots for over 20 years (parakeets/budgies, cockatiels, 6 subspecies of conures, parrotlets, amazons, lovebirds, etc.). I've been published in "Budgies" and "Cockatiels" offered by Bow Tie Productions, and have written avian articles for publication in England. I can provide advice in raising healthy birds, handfeeding/weaning babies, some health problems (although I'm NOT an avian veterinarian), nail/beak/wing clipping, general husbandry, etc. I also have experience with racing/showing homing pigeons. I cannot diagnose specific illness over this website. If you suspect your bird is ill or if you have an emergency, contact an avian veterinarian or emergency pet clinic ASAP.
