Birds--General/Parakeets and Tumors

Question
My parakeet has what looks like small tumors on the top of both of his wings(the shoulder area). The growths irritate him and he picks at them so that they bleed. Do you have any idea what they may be?

Answer
Hi, Ashley.  Thanks for posting!

They may be tumors!  You need to take your keet to an avian veterinarian for evaluation of these areas.  Not a cat/dog vet, but a vet certified in treating aves.  Keets are prone to fatty tumors usually as a result of a seed diet or they can get tumors just the same as humans.  They need to be checked out by a birdie vet, the sooner the better.

Expertise

I`ve been raising/breeding/handfeeding/selling parrots for over 20 years (parakeets/budgies, cockatiels, 6 subspecies of conures, parrotlets, amazons, lovebirds, etc.). I've been published in "Budgies" and "Cockatiels" offered by Bow Tie Productions, and have written avian articles for publication in England. I can provide advice in raising healthy birds, handfeeding/weaning babies, some health problems (although I'm NOT an avian veterinarian), nail/beak/wing clipping, general husbandry, etc. I also have experience with racing/showing homing pigeons. I cannot diagnose specific illness over this website. If you suspect your bird is ill or if you have an emergency, contact an avian veterinarian or emergency pet clinic ASAP.
