Question
hello im really hoping you can help me i just Bought  two red lore parrots there still a bit shy but one seems to be  plucking his feathers  from the top  of his head is that normal or should I put them in different cages?  How long does it take them to talk? If you can please, help thanks magi

Answer
Hi, Magi.

A bird can't pluck its own feathers from the top of its own head.  Therefore, the other bird must be overpreening the other bird.  Preening/overpreening is a normal behavior in parrots.  You don't have to put them in separate cages...one will just have a bald area on its head from being overpreened.  The feathers will grow back when the bird molts as long as the feather folicles aren't damaged.

There are no guarantees that your birds will talk.  Some parrots talk, some don't.  You'll just have to find out with time if these birds will talk.

Expertise

I`ve been raising/breeding/handfeeding/selling parrots for over 20 years (parakeets/budgies, cockatiels, 6 subspecies of conures, parrotlets, amazons, lovebirds, etc.). I've been published in "Budgies" and "Cockatiels" offered by Bow Tie Productions, and have written avian articles for publication in England. I can provide advice in raising healthy birds, handfeeding/weaning babies, some health problems (although I'm NOT an avian veterinarian), nail/beak/wing clipping, general husbandry, etc. I also have experience with racing/showing homing pigeons. I cannot diagnose specific illness over this website. If you suspect your bird is ill or if you have an emergency, contact an avian veterinarian or emergency pet clinic ASAP.
