Birds--General/Sick budgie

Question
My parakeet has been sick since ll/15/06.  He started spitting up a really thick phlegm.  I gave him OTC medication which didn't help, so I took him to an Avaian Vet and she took a culture and said he had a yeast infection.  She prescribed liquid Diflucan and I gave it to him for 10 days.  He seemed to perk up for a few days, then on Sunday,(12/17/06) he threw up the slimey phlegm so I know whatever kind of yeast infection he had is back.  He's hungry, but won't really eat like he used to.  I still have a half bottle of Diflucan left and I started with 6cc's again today.  I don't know what to do for him. Any suggestions?

Answer
Hi, Candace.  Thanks for posting!

Take this bird back to the avian veterinarian or at least call the veterinarian and tell her what's going on.  She might prescribe a different type of medicine or try a different course of treatment for your bird.  Also, it's not uncommon for a bird to have to take 2 or more rounds of a medicine in order to get well.

Expertise

I`ve been raising/breeding/handfeeding/selling parrots for over 20 years (parakeets/budgies, cockatiels, 6 subspecies of conures, parrotlets, amazons, lovebirds, etc.). I've been published in "Budgies" and "Cockatiels" offered by Bow Tie Productions, and have written avian articles for publication in England. I can provide advice in raising healthy birds, handfeeding/weaning babies, some health problems (although I'm NOT an avian veterinarian), nail/beak/wing clipping, general husbandry, etc. I also have experience with racing/showing homing pigeons. I cannot diagnose specific illness over this website. If you suspect your bird is ill or if you have an emergency, contact an avian veterinarian or emergency pet clinic ASAP.
