Question
Our sun conure chews my wife's tea shirts, she doesn't mind, however we are concerned that he may get sick from chewing. I asked a owner of a bird store; he didn't think it would hurt him.

We would like your advise. This bird is our baby; and he is very spoiled...we wouldn't have it any other way.

Hi, Jerry.  Thanks for posting.

Chewing is perfectly normal for a parrot.  Parrots chew on anything and everything they can get their beaks on!  Chewing your wife's tea shirts won't make your sun conure sick!  You don't even want to know how many articles of clothing I wear that have little beak holes in them!

I`ve been raising/breeding/handfeeding/selling parrots for over 20 years (parakeets/budgies, cockatiels, 6 subspecies of conures, parrotlets, amazons, lovebirds, etc.). I've been published in "Budgies" and "Cockatiels" offered by Bow Tie Productions, and have written avian articles for publication in England. I can provide advice in raising healthy birds, handfeeding/weaning babies, some health problems (although I'm NOT an avian veterinarian), nail/beak/wing clipping, general husbandry, etc. I also have experience with racing/showing homing pigeons. I cannot diagnose specific illness over this website. If you suspect your bird is ill or if you have an emergency, contact an avian veterinarian or emergency pet clinic ASAP.
