Question
When / How do you clean a breeding pair of Love birds cage?  Or do you? There is about a week between the first and second egg because I gave a nesting box and materials.  I currently have four eggs. They don't mind me changing out food dishes or water but anything else seems to up set the hen?

Answer
Hi, AP.

You don't disturb a nest with eggs in it.  You'll need to wait until after the babies arrive to clean out the nesting box.  As far as the cage goes, if you can change the food dishes, etc., you should be able to clean out the cage itself (not the nesting box).  Just do it quickly so the birds don't attack you!  If it can wait, I'd let it wait if it upsets the hen.

Expertise

I`ve been raising/breeding/handfeeding/selling parrots for over 20 years (parakeets/budgies, cockatiels, 6 subspecies of conures, parrotlets, amazons, lovebirds, etc.). I've been published in "Budgies" and "Cockatiels" offered by Bow Tie Productions, and have written avian articles for publication in England. I can provide advice in raising healthy birds, handfeeding/weaning babies, some health problems (although I'm NOT an avian veterinarian), nail/beak/wing clipping, general husbandry, etc. I also have experience with racing/showing homing pigeons. I cannot diagnose specific illness over this website. If you suspect your bird is ill or if you have an emergency, contact an avian veterinarian or emergency pet clinic ASAP.
