Birds--General/baby parakeet bleeding under wing

Question
Our baby parakeet has pecked/scratched himself under the wing quite badly - the underside of his wing is very bloody. I have been wiping the area off with a wet, soft cloth to try to clean the dried blood off, but don't know what else to do. What can I do to help? What is a possible cause? My daughter is extremely concerned that he is going to die.

Answer
Hi, Kathy.  Thanks for posting!

How old is this baby?  Is this baby fully feathered?  Is the wound bleeding or do you only see dried blood?  How much blood has the bird lost?  Is this bird in with other birds or is the bird by itself?  Do you see anything in the cage (toys, perches, etc.) with blood on them?  Anything in the cage the bird can get injured on (you'll need to look closely since the bird is small)?

I need more information in order to help you and your bird.

Expertise

I`ve been raising/breeding/handfeeding/selling parrots for over 20 years (parakeets/budgies, cockatiels, 6 subspecies of conures, parrotlets, amazons, lovebirds, etc.). I've been published in "Budgies" and "Cockatiels" offered by Bow Tie Productions, and have written avian articles for publication in England. I can provide advice in raising healthy birds, handfeeding/weaning babies, some health problems (although I'm NOT an avian veterinarian), nail/beak/wing clipping, general husbandry, etc. I also have experience with racing/showing homing pigeons. I cannot diagnose specific illness over this website. If you suspect your bird is ill or if you have an emergency, contact an avian veterinarian or emergency pet clinic ASAP.
