Question
Hi, i have two budgies.I know for a fact that one is a male, but i'm not sure about the other one.I think it's a female because of the whitish cere. She is also a dominant pied. The male feeds her and preens her, but will a female occasionaly feed a male or preen a male?Thats why i am unsure of its gender.

Answer
Hi, James.  Thanks for posting.

Yes, female budgies sometimes feed their male mates and yes they do preen their mates.  On pied's, it's often difficult to sex a female, especially if the cere is white (cere on a normal color budgie is brown/beige/tan).  I'd say your other budgie is likely a female.

Expertise

I`ve been raising/breeding/handfeeding/selling parrots for over 20 years (parakeets/budgies, cockatiels, 6 subspecies of conures, parrotlets, amazons, lovebirds, etc.). I've been published in "Budgies" and "Cockatiels" offered by Bow Tie Productions, and have written avian articles for publication in England. I can provide advice in raising healthy birds, handfeeding/weaning babies, some health problems (although I'm NOT an avian veterinarian), nail/beak/wing clipping, general husbandry, etc. I also have experience with racing/showing homing pigeons. I cannot diagnose specific illness over this website. If you suspect your bird is ill or if you have an emergency, contact an avian veterinarian or emergency pet clinic ASAP.
