Answer
Hi, Anoumous.  Thanks for posting!

If your budgies aren't mating, then any eggs will be infertile.  Females can lay infertile eggs without mating with a male.  Also, if you want your pair to lay fertile eggs and you want the eggs to hatch, you need to put them in a separate cage away from other budgies.  You want only the father and mother of a clutch of eggs in the same cage.

To tell if an egg is fertile, about 10 days after an egg is laid, you can "candle" it.  Candling is the process of shining a light source (like a flashlight or candling light) through an egg to see if you can see any veins and a dark spot inside the egg.  Practice with a chicken egg from your refrigerator...these eggs are infertile and you should be able to see right through it when a light source is behind it.  A fertile parrot egg at 10 days will look different.  Don't touch your budgie egg(s) with your bare hands...use a glove or some type of tissue or towel or something so the oil/dirt/germs from your hands doesn't contaminate the egg.

Expertise

I`ve been raising/breeding/handfeeding/selling parrots for over 20 years (parakeets/budgies, cockatiels, 6 subspecies of conures, parrotlets, amazons, lovebirds, etc.). I've been published in "Budgies" and "Cockatiels" offered by Bow Tie Productions, and have written avian articles for publication in England. I can provide advice in raising healthy birds, handfeeding/weaning babies, some health problems (although I'm NOT an avian veterinarian), nail/beak/wing clipping, general husbandry, etc. I also have experience with racing/showing homing pigeons. I cannot diagnose specific illness over this website. If you suspect your bird is ill or if you have an emergency, contact an avian veterinarian or emergency pet clinic ASAP.
