Question
My budgie is not standing erect on her perch anymore and seems to keep shifting her feet. I have noticed some bumps have developed on her legs that look about the color of chicken fat.She is a very small bird compared to the others I have and is a lot lighter in weight?

Answer
Hi, Debbie.  Thanks for posting.

I don't know from the information in your post what this could be.  I recommend you get your budgie to an avian vet for an evaluation (not a cat/dog vet, but an exotic animal vet).  Could be scaly mites, but scaly mites don't usually appear the color of chicken fat (they bury under the skin and the area looks like warts) or could be some type of infection (yellow color could indicate infection).

Expertise

I`ve been raising/breeding/handfeeding/selling parrots for over 20 years (parakeets/budgies, cockatiels, 6 subspecies of conures, parrotlets, amazons, lovebirds, etc.). I've been published in "Budgies" and "Cockatiels" offered by Bow Tie Productions, and have written avian articles for publication in England. I can provide advice in raising healthy birds, handfeeding/weaning babies, some health problems (although I'm NOT an avian veterinarian), nail/beak/wing clipping, general husbandry, etc. I also have experience with racing/showing homing pigeons. I cannot diagnose specific illness over this website. If you suspect your bird is ill or if you have an emergency, contact an avian veterinarian or emergency pet clinic ASAP.
