Question -
I have chickens and recently a chick of mine has a spayled leg and i wanted to know how to fix it.! Ive been careing for it since it has hatched and hope its okay. I breed lovebirds and have conures but never seen a splayed leg before! Help! Thanks kaila

Answer -
Hi, Kaila.  Thanks for posting.

I know nothing about chickens, but I know a lot about splay leg.  Information on splay leg is readily available on the internet if you search using that search string (splay leg).

I don't know if this will work on a chicken, but worth a try.  My website has information on how to hobble a splayed leg.  Hobbling must be done as early as possible, before the bird's cartlage turns to bone...the sooner the better for fixing the problem.

Answer
Hi, Kaila.  I'm so sorry!  My website is:

http://www.angelfire.com/falcon/birdinfo/index.html

To search the internet (I just double-checked this so I know there's lots of info out there), go to www.google.com and enter the search string "splay leg."  Many websites will come up providing information.

I've personally experienced a high rate of correction with hobbling if the condition is found early enough, such as 2 weeks or younger.  It works partially if a bird is older (bird lives with a partial disability).  However, once a bird reaches 3-4 weeks, depending on the bird, it usually isn't successful.

I`ve been raising/breeding/handfeeding/selling parrots for over 20 years (parakeets/budgies, cockatiels, 6 subspecies of conures, parrotlets, amazons, lovebirds, etc.).
