Question
HI my bird one of his eyes has a white around his eye
he seems ok with it but it bothers me.... do u think hes gone blind in his eye thank you

Answer
Hi, Jodi.  Thanks for posting!

You'll need to better describe the location of this white.  Is it white on the eyeball itself or around the outside of the eye?  If the eyeball itself, is it around the pupil, iris???  Have you noticed if your bird uses its other eye only to look at things or do you think your bird can see things on the side that has the white?  Have you tried putting your hand up to that side to see how the bird reacts (does he look at your hand with that eye or does he even see your hand there)?  You need to experiment a little to see if you can tell if your bird can see out of this eye.

Is the eyeball itself still round or has it gone flat?  A flat eyeball means the fluid inside the eye is gone and the bird is blind.  The location of a peck or injury will be white.

Sometimes birds can get cataracts...how old is your bird?

Expertise

I`ve been raising/breeding/handfeeding/selling parrots for over 20 years (parakeets/budgies, cockatiels, 6 subspecies of conures, parrotlets, amazons, lovebirds, etc.). I've been published in "Budgies" and "Cockatiels" offered by Bow Tie Productions, and have written avian articles for publication in England. I can provide advice in raising healthy birds, handfeeding/weaning babies, some health problems (although I'm NOT an avian veterinarian), nail/beak/wing clipping, general husbandry, etc. I also have experience with racing/showing homing pigeons. I cannot diagnose specific illness over this website. If you suspect your bird is ill or if you have an emergency, contact an avian veterinarian or emergency pet clinic ASAP.
