Question
Hi,
My teil has stopped playing with the toys in her cage- I have changed her toys and moved them around and yet she doesn't play- When she come out she will play with a showstring for a short time.  she does seem happy although I realize she must be lonely as a single bird.  Do you have any suggestions?

Answer
Hi, Lezlie,

I picked your question up from the question pool.

Evidently, your bird no longer enjoys the toys she has.  Not all birds play with toys.  If you spend time with your bird, she is not lonely.  Birds don't have to have other birds around in order to lead happy lives.  Perhaps she isn't playing with her toys because she has you.  You cannot force a bird to play with toys...either they do or they don't.

Expertise

I`ve been raising/breeding/handfeeding/selling parrots for over 20 years (parakeets/budgies, cockatiels, 6 subspecies of conures, parrotlets, amazons, lovebirds, etc.). I've been published in "Budgies" and "Cockatiels" offered by Bow Tie Productions, and have written avian articles for publication in England. I can provide advice in raising healthy birds, handfeeding/weaning babies, some health problems (although I'm NOT an avian veterinarian), nail/beak/wing clipping, general husbandry, etc. I also have experience with racing/showing homing pigeons. I cannot diagnose specific illness over this website. If you suspect your bird is ill or if you have an emergency, contact an avian veterinarian or emergency pet clinic ASAP.
