Question
please help!  our cockatiel was out of his cage today and got spooked.   he flew into a fly strip that was hanging and most of his feathers on one wing are pulled out.   there was a little bleeding, but it stopped quickly.  he is using his wings normally, doesn't seem to be in pain.  he's just being very quiet.   is this normal? what can we do for him?

Answer
Hi, Karen.  Thanks for posting!

Your bird had a traumatic incident and is most likely very stressed out, which is probably the reason he is being quiet right now (as long as there are no injuries, etc.).  Allow him quiet time to get over this stress.  He should be OK in a day or so, as long as nothing else is wrong.

Expertise

I`ve been raising/breeding/handfeeding/selling parrots for over 20 years (parakeets/budgies, cockatiels, 6 subspecies of conures, parrotlets, amazons, lovebirds, etc.). I've been published in "Budgies" and "Cockatiels" offered by Bow Tie Productions, and have written avian articles for publication in England. I can provide advice in raising healthy birds, handfeeding/weaning babies, some health problems (although I'm NOT an avian veterinarian), nail/beak/wing clipping, general husbandry, etc. I also have experience with racing/showing homing pigeons. I cannot diagnose specific illness over this website. If you suspect your bird is ill or if you have an emergency, contact an avian veterinarian or emergency pet clinic ASAP.
