Question
My parakeet, Ozzy needs room to hop, but his cage is too small. I mean, its just the right size for him, but he needs atleast one toy, and I can't fit it in his cage. I don't think i should get another cage because he just got used to his. What should I do?

Answer
Hi, Rachel.  Thanks for posting!

If you can't fit even 1 toy in your keet cage, it is WAY too small or overcrowded with other stuff!  You definitely need a bigger cage for your keet.  Your keet will be very happy to have a bigger cage...take my word for it!  A bird needs room enough in it's cage to vigorously flap it's wings without any part of it's body/feathers touching anything inside the cage.  This is in addition to perches, food/water dishes, toys, etc.  Get your keet a bigger cage!

Expertise

I`ve been raising/breeding/handfeeding/selling parrots for over 20 years (parakeets/budgies, cockatiels, 6 subspecies of conures, parrotlets, amazons, lovebirds, etc.). I've been published in "Budgies" and "Cockatiels" offered by Bow Tie Productions, and have written avian articles for publication in England. I can provide advice in raising healthy birds, handfeeding/weaning babies, some health problems (although I'm NOT an avian veterinarian), nail/beak/wing clipping, general husbandry, etc. I also have experience with racing/showing homing pigeons. I cannot diagnose specific illness over this website. If you suspect your bird is ill or if you have an emergency, contact an avian veterinarian or emergency pet clinic ASAP.
