Question
Hello

When a budgie has hatch from its egg how long should we wait until we start feeding it.  The mother bird gave up sitting on her eggs so we bought them in.  Also what tempature should  the baby be keep at.  Is it the same as the eggs that have not hatched?

Hi, Diane,

You should start handfeeding within 24 hours.  Babies should be kept at 98 degrees F 24/7 until they have enough feathers to keep themselves warm.  Visit my website for more information:

I`ve been raising/breeding/handfeeding/selling parrots for over 20 years (parakeets/budgies, cockatiels, 6 subspecies of conures, parrotlets, amazons, lovebirds, etc.). I've been published in "Budgies" and "Cockatiels" offered by Bow Tie Productions, and have written avian articles for publication in England. I can provide advice in raising healthy birds, handfeeding/weaning babies, some health problems (although I'm NOT an avian veterinarian), nail/beak/wing clipping, general husbandry, etc. I also have experience with racing/showing homing pigeons.
