Question
I was wondering how my lovebird (Randy) will deal with me leaving to college next year. I will be in a different country all together so it will?. He gets along with my parents when im not there, but will he start to take his feathers off, say...when I leave? Thanks, I was not sure there was anyone else i could ask, Thanks!!!!

Answer
Hi, Derek,

How your bird will deal with you leaving depends on many factors, such as how bonded the bird is to you, how much time you spend with the bird, the individual personality of this bird, etc.  I recommend you gradually begin to spend less time with this bird allowing your parents to spend more and more time with the bird.  This will help alleviate some stress with your departure and help the bird to get used to the change in people in his life.  Not all birds are feather pluckers and feather plucking can be caused by many things, not just stress.

Expertise

I`ve been raising/breeding/handfeeding/selling parrots for over 20 years (parakeets/budgies, cockatiels, 6 subspecies of conures, parrotlets, amazons, lovebirds, etc.). I've been published in "Budgies" and "Cockatiels" offered by Bow Tie Productions, and have written avian articles for publication in England. I can provide advice in raising healthy birds, handfeeding/weaning babies, some health problems (although I'm NOT an avian veterinarian), nail/beak/wing clipping, general husbandry, etc. I also have experience with racing/showing homing pigeons. I cannot diagnose specific illness over this website. If you suspect your bird is ill or if you have an emergency, contact an avian veterinarian or emergency pet clinic ASAP.
