Question
Hey Chrys
Do you think you can give me a short list of natural branches(for them to perch on)that are poisonous to parakeet? And also are fruits such as pineapples, melons, and pears poisonous to parakeets?
THANK YOU VERY MUCH
-Jessica

Answer
Hi, Jessica.  Thanks for posting!

You can find poisonous wood for birds by searching the internet with the search string "poisonous wood for parrots" or "unsafe wood for birds" or "unsafe trees for parrots" or something similar.

Pineapples, melons and pears are not poisonous to keets, however, don't give them any citrus seeds (like apple seeds or orange seeds).  However, I've found most keets won't eat most fruits unless they are shredded and mixed in with something else.  Try cooked brown rice with vegetables mixed in and shred fruits into this mix.

I`ve been raising/breeding/handfeeding/selling parrots for over 20 years (parakeets/budgies, cockatiels, 6 subspecies of conures, parrotlets, amazons, lovebirds, etc.). I've been published in "Budgies" and "Cockatiels" offered by Bow Tie Productions, and have written avian articles for publication in England. I can provide advice in raising healthy birds, handfeeding/weaning babies, some health problems (although I'm NOT an avian veterinarian), nail/beak/wing clipping, general husbandry, etc. I also have experience with racing/showing homing pigeons. I cannot diagnose specific illness over this website. If you suspect your bird is ill or if you have an emergency, contact an avian veterinarian or emergency pet clinic ASAP.
