Question
Please I need help my parakeets are kissing and bobbing there heads up and down right after. Are these the signs of mating or are they just playing around like my father says.

Answer
Hi, Cynthia.  Thanks for posting!

Do you have a male and female?  This behavior could mean 2 things:

1.  Could be these birds are bonded with each other and the male is feeding the female beak-to-beak.  This is a sign that they are pair-bonded.  The male will regurgitate food to his mate.

2.  Could be they are just "talking" with each other.  Keets greet/talk with each other by "beaking."  This is when they touch their beaks together and bob their heads up and down.

Expertise

I`ve been raising/breeding/handfeeding/selling parrots for over 20 years (parakeets/budgies, cockatiels, 6 subspecies of conures, parrotlets, amazons, lovebirds, etc.). I've been published in "Budgies" and "Cockatiels" offered by Bow Tie Productions, and have written avian articles for publication in England. I can provide advice in raising healthy birds, handfeeding/weaning babies, some health problems (although I'm NOT an avian veterinarian), nail/beak/wing clipping, general husbandry, etc. I also have experience with racing/showing homing pigeons. I cannot diagnose specific illness over this website. If you suspect your bird is ill or if you have an emergency, contact an avian veterinarian or emergency pet clinic ASAP.
