Question
Hi I am getting a new budgy today and i need a few starter tips like hoe much to feed it when to change the feed howlong after i get it should i teach it to perch on my finger and that sort of stuff

Answer
Hi, Lliam,

A lot of what you are asking depends on how old your bird is, where you buy it from, whether the bird is tame or not to begin with, etc.  You should start out feeding this bird exactly the same food that it is currently being fed.  If a diet change is required, you should do this gradually after your bird has settled down in your home.  You should change the food when the bird has eaten all the food in the food dish.  I would need lots of other detailed information from you before I can answer your other questions.  Visit my website for a start to things you need to know about birds:

Expertise

I`ve been raising/breeding/handfeeding/selling parrots for over 20 years (parakeets/budgies, cockatiels, 6 subspecies of conures, parrotlets, amazons, lovebirds, etc.). I've been published in "Budgies" and "Cockatiels" offered by Bow Tie Productions, and have written avian articles for publication in England. I can provide advice in raising healthy birds, handfeeding/weaning babies, some health problems (although I'm NOT an avian veterinarian), nail/beak/wing clipping, general husbandry, etc. I also have experience with racing/showing homing pigeons. I cannot diagnose specific illness over this website. If you suspect your bird is ill or if you have an emergency, contact an avian veterinarian or emergency pet clinic ASAP.
