Birds--General/new parakeet

Question

-------------------------

PetsMart had given us a 14 day health guarantee and they were very kind and apologetic about the bird.  They did replace the bird free of charge and gave us a brand new guarantee with the new bird.  I would've taken him to an avian vet today, but they couldn't get him in and the only other 2 options were to go all the way to St. Louis or take him back to PetsMart and let their "house" vet look at him.  When I got home on my lunch and saw him, I knew he wasn't going to make it. This morning when I left the house he was sitting on his perch watching Sesame Street. A couple of hours later when my daughter woke up, he was in the bottom of his cage. Such a DRASTIC and quick change! Thank you for your help and for your suggestions.  Hopefully the new baby will do better.  If not, I'll holler at your way again!

Answer
Hi, Karen.

Sounds like this could have been a viral infection that he couldn't shake right away...viruses kill animals very quickly, small birds in a few hours.  Bacterial infections take 10-14 days to surface, then can take several weeks for the birds body to shake off, even with meds.

I hope you enjoy your new bird as much as you did the one that passed.

Expertise

I`ve been raising/breeding/handfeeding/selling parrots for over 20 years (parakeets/budgies, cockatiels, 6 subspecies of conures, parrotlets, amazons, lovebirds, etc.). I've been published in "Budgies" and "Cockatiels" offered by Bow Tie Productions, and have written avian articles for publication in England. I can provide advice in raising healthy birds, handfeeding/weaning babies, some health problems (although I'm NOT an avian veterinarian), nail/beak/wing clipping, general husbandry, etc. I also have experience with racing/showing homing pigeons. I cannot diagnose specific illness over this website. If you suspect your bird is ill or if you have an emergency, contact an avian veterinarian or emergency pet clinic ASAP.
