Birds--General/outdoor temperature for lovebirds

Question
I live in Jacksonville, Florida.  My lovebird pair has eggs in the nest and the
nighttime temps are starting to fall into the 50s and 40s.  At what point
should I put a heating pad next to the cage or bring them inside?  They live in
a very large, hard-to-move cage on a covered porch near water (pool).

Answer
Hi, Irene.  Thanks for posting!

40s and 50s is too cold for eggs/babies and probably for the adults, depending on how much wind is in their area, etc.  To be safe, I'd recommend bringing them in until after their babies have hatched and are old enough to keep themselves warm (don't see that a heating pad would be much benefit).

Expertise

I`ve been raising/breeding/handfeeding/selling parrots for over 20 years (parakeets/budgies, cockatiels, 6 subspecies of conures, parrotlets, amazons, lovebirds, etc.). I've been published in "Budgies" and "Cockatiels" offered by Bow Tie Productions, and have written avian articles for publication in England. I can provide advice in raising healthy birds, handfeeding/weaning babies, some health problems (although I'm NOT an avian veterinarian), nail/beak/wing clipping, general husbandry, etc. I also have experience with racing/showing homing pigeons. I cannot diagnose specific illness over this website. If you suspect your bird is ill or if you have an emergency, contact an avian veterinarian or emergency pet clinic ASAP.
