Question
Hey!
I'm very worried about my parakeet,, she has a bloody wound under her tail and continues to pick at it. It's not noticible until she lifts her tail. I have no idea what it could be!

Answer
Hi, Jenna.  Thanks for posting!

If this is a wound that is bleeding and she is picking at it, you need to take your keet to an avian veterinarian for a medical evaluation.  Not a cat/dog vet, but an avian vet.  This area will likely get worse, not better, by the bird picking at it.  It could also become infected, etc.  Therefore, you need a birdie vet to evaluate what the problem is and provide medication if required.  The vet will also likely be able to tell you what caused it.

If you need info finding an avian vet, go to this website for help:

http://www.aav.org/vet-lookup/

If the above website isn't beneficial, check your local phone book, get a reference from another local vet, get a reference from a bird breeder in your area, etc.  If the above site can provide a reference to a bird vet close to you, you could call and ask if they know of an exotic animal vet closer to you.

Sorry I couldn't help more via this site.  This could be a number of things and without being able to see the wound and/or know the circumstances, I can't be much help.

Expertise

I`ve been raising/breeding/handfeeding/selling parrots for over 20 years (parakeets/budgies, cockatiels, 6 subspecies of conures, parrotlets, amazons, lovebirds, etc.). I've been published in "Budgies" and "Cockatiels" offered by Bow Tie Productions, and have written avian articles for publication in England. I can provide advice in raising healthy birds, handfeeding/weaning babies, some health problems (although I'm NOT an avian veterinarian), nail/beak/wing clipping, general husbandry, etc. I also have experience with racing/showing homing pigeons. I cannot diagnose specific illness over this website. If you suspect your bird is ill or if you have an emergency, contact an avian veterinarian or emergency pet clinic ASAP.
