Question
I own a parakeet and do not know how old he is, i do know that he is not young .  I  wanted to know the life span of parakeet because if i were to know even though i don't know his age it would give me a pretty good idea of how long he has .

thank you

Answer
Hi, Samantha.  Thanks for posting!

A bird's (or any other animal for that matter)lifespan is directly dependent on genetics and how well the bird is cared for during it's lifetime.  Diet is key...if your keet isn't on a healthy diet, it's lifespan will be reduced.  This means an all-seed diet is a poor diet.  Visit my website for more information on a good diet...come back with any additional questions.

Expertise

I`ve been raising/breeding/handfeeding/selling parrots for over 20 years (parakeets/budgies, cockatiels, 6 subspecies of conures, parrotlets, amazons, lovebirds, etc.). I've been published in "Budgies" and "Cockatiels" offered by Bow Tie Productions, and have written avian articles for publication in England. I can provide advice in raising healthy birds, handfeeding/weaning babies, some health problems (although I'm NOT an avian veterinarian), nail/beak/wing clipping, general husbandry, etc. I also have experience with racing/showing homing pigeons. I cannot diagnose specific illness over this website. If you suspect your bird is ill or if you have an emergency, contact an avian veterinarian or emergency pet clinic ASAP.
