Question
I recently rescued 4 parakeets...one of the females has a strange protuberance on her vent area...it looks like a thick growth of skin that comes out from inside ...it is reddish in color...?any idea of what could this be?

Answer
Hi, Juan.  Thanks for posting!

Yes, it's called a papilloma and is caused by a virus.  You'll need to take this keet to an avian vet ASAP who can remove this papilloma via laser surgery or regular surgery.  This bird should not be bred.  If not taken care of, it could cause the bird not to be able to defecate and could cause other health problems.

I had 2 amazon's who had papilloma's that had to be removed once per year.  However, the last time they were removed, they didn't come back, at least externally where I could see them.

Expertise

I`ve been raising/breeding/handfeeding/selling parrots for over 20 years (parakeets/budgies, cockatiels, 6 subspecies of conures, parrotlets, amazons, lovebirds, etc.). I've been published in "Budgies" and "Cockatiels" offered by Bow Tie Productions, and have written avian articles for publication in England. I can provide advice in raising healthy birds, handfeeding/weaning babies, some health problems (although I'm NOT an avian veterinarian), nail/beak/wing clipping, general husbandry, etc. I also have experience with racing/showing homing pigeons. I cannot diagnose specific illness over this website. If you suspect your bird is ill or if you have an emergency, contact an avian veterinarian or emergency pet clinic ASAP.
