Question
I have had my parakeets for about 7 years this mornimg they were fighting drawing blood. I believe the female started it the male is the one who was bleeding from under his wing and foot. I did seperate them before going to work Should i keep them seperated? (is it just the 7 year itch) just kidding really don't know what to do please help.

Answer
Hi, Karen.  Thanks for posting.

I recommend you keep them separated, at least for a while.  You could keep them side-by-side, but in different cages.  Female keets can be ruthless toward other keets, usually with other females, particularly if there are eggs/babies/nestbox involved.  However, I've seen female keets who would fight (and often kill) any other bird in the cage.  I don't know what goes through their minds/why they behave like this, just something that happens in the bird world.

You can try putting them back together again at a later date, but I'd supervise them if/when you do.  I've come home to a dead keet at the hand of another keet on more than 1 occasion (and I've caught quite a few in the process of inflicting harm on another).

Expertise

I`ve been raising/breeding/handfeeding/selling parrots for over 20 years (parakeets/budgies, cockatiels, 6 subspecies of conures, parrotlets, amazons, lovebirds, etc.). I've been published in "Budgies" and "Cockatiels" offered by Bow Tie Productions, and have written avian articles for publication in England. I can provide advice in raising healthy birds, handfeeding/weaning babies, some health problems (although I'm NOT an avian veterinarian), nail/beak/wing clipping, general husbandry, etc. I also have experience with racing/showing homing pigeons. I cannot diagnose specific illness over this website. If you suspect your bird is ill or if you have an emergency, contact an avian veterinarian or emergency pet clinic ASAP.
