Birds--General/Should parakeets sleep standing?

Question
Hello Chris, I've got three adult parakeets, and they all line up to perch on a bar(which is where they spend most of their time when they're awake, too)when I turn out the lights and cover their cage.  The question I have is, is that comfortable for them?  Would they prefer a nest?  If so, how would I go about getting/building one, and where in the cage should it be placed?
Thanks!

Answer
Hi, Xohra.  Thanks for posting!

It's perfectly natural and normal for parakeets to sleep standing up...Mother Nature made birds this way.  Some birds even sleep hanging on to the sides of their cages.  Birds do not lay down or sit down to sleep!  This would be abnormal.  Therefore, they do not need a nest to sleep in.  Nests/nesting boxes are for pair-bonded birds to lay eggs in and raise their babies.

Expertise

I`ve been raising/breeding/handfeeding/selling parrots for over 20 years (parakeets/budgies, cockatiels, 6 subspecies of conures, parrotlets, amazons, lovebirds, etc.). I've been published in "Budgies" and "Cockatiels" offered by Bow Tie Productions, and have written avian articles for publication in England. I can provide advice in raising healthy birds, handfeeding/weaning babies, some health problems (although I'm NOT an avian veterinarian), nail/beak/wing clipping, general husbandry, etc. I also have experience with racing/showing homing pigeons. I cannot diagnose specific illness over this website. If you suspect your bird is ill or if you have an emergency, contact an avian veterinarian or emergency pet clinic ASAP.
