Question
Hi Chrys this morning i discovered one female had died leaving three chicks in the nest the older ov the three left the nest during the day as he or she was at least a week older ,what can i do if the male does not feed the chicks and how,p.s i have 7 budgies in total thats including 2 young ones .

Answer
Hi, Leon,

I'm sorry for responding late to your question(s).  I was hospitalized and trying to catch up.

Males usually won't feed babes in the nest...this isn't their job.  I would be very surprised if the male feeds any babies still in the nest.  They feed the female while he female feeds the offspring, and then the male feeds offspring that have left the nesting box.  You will need to pull the babies for handfeeding to ensure their survival.  Visit my website for more information:  www.angelfire.com/falcon/birdinfo/index.html

Expertise

I`ve been raising/breeding/handfeeding/selling parrots for over 20 years (parakeets/budgies, cockatiels, 6 subspecies of conures, parrotlets, amazons, lovebirds, etc.). I've been published in "Budgies" and "Cockatiels" offered by Bow Tie Productions, and have written avian articles for publication in England. I can provide advice in raising healthy birds, handfeeding/weaning babies, some health problems (although I'm NOT an avian veterinarian), nail/beak/wing clipping, general husbandry, etc. I also have experience with racing/showing homing pigeons. I cannot diagnose specific illness over this website. If you suspect your bird is ill or if you have an emergency, contact an avian veterinarian or emergency pet clinic ASAP.
