Question
These are the symptoms I noticed this a.m.
1: Labored breathing...sounds congested
2: took her out to play (in the house) and she didn't fly just acts listless
3: not herself
Please advise me soon...she is our loved pet and I don't really know what to do. Will you please send me an email ? I live in Orange Park, Fl and don't know anything about what type of vet to take her to. Thank you, feeling desperate.
Hi, Janet,
Your bird is showing signs of illness, most likely respiratory related. Take her to a certified avian vet ASAP. An avian vet is an exotic animal vet. Check this website for help: www.aav.org. Look in your local phone book for avian vets. Ask a local dog/cat vet for a reference. Ask a pet shop for a reference. Do not hesitate to get her to a bird vet right away. Since she's showing signs of illness, she's already been sick too long.

I`ve been raising/breeding/handfeeding/selling parrots for over 20 years (parakeets/budgies, cockatiels, 6 subspecies of conures, parrotlets, amazons, lovebirds, etc.). I've been published in "Budgies" and "Cockatiels" offered by Bow Tie Productions, and have written avian articles for publication in England. I can provide advice in raising healthy birds, handfeeding/weaning babies, some health problems (although I'm NOT an avian veterinarian), nail/beak/wing clipping, general husbandry, etc. I also have experience with racing/showing homing pigeons. I cannot diagnose specific illness over this website. If you suspect your bird is ill or if you have an emergency, contact an avian veterinarian or emergency pet clinic ASAP.
